Big Boy Room

Long before I became a mom, I’d swoon over images of “big boy rooms” on Pinterest. Now that I am a mother of not one, but two boys, I couldn’t wait to get to work on my son’s “big boy room” as we prepared to move him out of the nursery for the arrival of his new little brother. Now, you should know, I am a firm believer in hand-me-downs and 2nd hand furniture. Every room in my house (I double checked) has at least one, but often times several pieces of furniture that was either given to us by someone who didn’t want it anymore, purchased from Facebook marketplace, or sourced from my favorite local antique shop. They just don’t make furniture like they used to and there is nothing better than finding an heirloom quality piece at a great price. When it came time to figure out furniture situation for the big boy room, it was a no-brainer for me. My parents had carefully stored away the crib they purchased for me, a mere 33 years ago — still in mint condition. They also hung onto the dresser and nightstand from my grandparent’s house that my dad used when he was growing up. Each of these special pieces are a deep golden oak (I’m not afraid of colored wood, people!!) and I love that a piece of my family’s history lies within each of them. It’s still crazy to me that I used sleep in the very same crib I scoop my sleepy, mumbling toddler out of every morning. My brothers also slept in this crib as babies, and I love that it’s been given this second life in my home.

With the furniture in place, I got to work carefully curating the perfect shade of green for the walls (Magnolia - Silverado Sage), collecting wall art that was fun, classic, and cute. And topped things off with a boy room must - plaid curtains and a vintage (looking) rug. The big boy room is minimalist in that there are no toys in the room— only books, blankets, and clothes. I wanted to create a little haven for my little man; a safe space for his BIG toddler feelings to rest after a busy day. There is such a calm, cozy vibe that makes me never want to leave when I’m rocking him to sleep. In a few years, both boys will share this room. I day dream about tucking them in at night and hearing them giggle from our room down the hall until they fall asleep. Until then, we love spending evenings in here, reading books by the lamp light and winding down at the end of a long, longgggg day of raising BOYS :)
